The True God
1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
“We believe that there is one, and only one, living and true GOD (Deuteronomy 6:4-5), an infinite, intelligent Spirit (John 4:24), whose name is JEHOVAH (Exodus 3:14; 6:3-4; Revelation 1:4), the Maker and Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth (Revelation 4:8,11); inexpressibly glorious in holiness (Isaiah 6:3; Jeremiah 10:10), and worthy of all possible honor, confidence, and love (Mark 12:30); that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19; John 15:26; II Corinthians 13:14); equal in every divine perfection (John 10:30; 5:17-18), and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great ‘work of redemption’ (Ephesians 2:18).”
The Bible begins with the declaration, "In the beginning God..." (Genesis 1:1). In Hebrews 11:6 there is an explanation of first importance; "he that cometh to God must believe that He is...." The great priestly benediction is given in Numbers 6:24-26; and is to "put My name upon the children of Israel." Thus the whole Bible continually reveals God to whosoever will hear the word of the LORD.
The Divine names are the great illumination of the Doctrine of God in Scripture. The use of a particular name is God's way of giving us spiritual knowledge of the character, the will, and the ways of God. Our God is a "merciful God" (Deuteronomy 4:31); "a jealous God" (Exodus 20:5); "the faithful God" (Deuteronomy 7:9); "the everlasting God" (Genesis 21:33); "the Almighty God" (Genesis 17:1); "the most high God" (Genesis 14:18-20,22); and "the God of all grace" (I Peter 5:10).
The compounds of the Covenant Name, together with the "I am" declarations of our LORD, especially reveal the holy, saving love of GOD for us sinners. (Compare Genesis 22:14; Exodus 17:15-16; Judges 6:24; Psalm 23:1; Jeremiah 23:6; Ezekiel 48:35; Exodus 15:26; with John 4:26; 6:48; 8:12; 8:58; 10:7; 10:11; 10:36; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1.)
The doctrine of God's Tri-unity is much expressed in the Scriptures. Genesis chapter 1 declares the harmony of God in creation. God creates by His Word and the Spirit of God (compare Genesis 1:1-3; John 1:1-5; Psalm 104:30; Psalm 33:6; Colossians 1:12-17). "And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness..." (I Timothy 3:16). The Bible teaches that within the one essence of the Godhead there are three "persons" who are neither three gods on the one side, not parts or modes of God on the other, but coequally and coeternally God. In the divine work as recorded in the Bible, the one God is self-revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and therefore faith looks forward to the day when His servants shall serve Him. "And they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads" (Revelation 22:3-4).
Every Christian must contend earnestly for the full deity of our LORD, and for the full deity of the Holy Ghost (Acts 10:36; Ephesians 2:18,22; II Corinthians 13:14).
